PEDRO — Organizers for the annual Wayne National Forest Lake Vesuvius Kids Fishing Derby have selected Saturday, May 22 for an exciting, fun-filled day of fishing for children and their families.

Community youngsters ages 4 to 16 are invited to come out to the Lake Vesuvius boardwalk with their fishing poles, tackle boxes and bait to take part in the free fishing derby.

Registration will open at 8:30 a.m., and fishing will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Winners will be announced at 12:30 p.m. In addition to fishing, the day will feature hot dogs and beverages, fun contests and educational activities.

This event is hosted by Wayne National Forest and partnered with the Lawrence County Bass Club, Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife, Isaak Walton League, and Ohio University Southern Nature Center.

Youngsters are encouraged to pre-register by visiting or calling the Wayne National Forest Ironton Ranger District at (740) 534-6500, but can also register at the fishing derby from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m.

All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Participants should bring their own fishing pole, bucket and bait if they have them. Some poles and bait will be available for children who don’t have their own.

Participants are also encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather, including bringing a hat and sunscreen.

The Wayne National Forest and its partner organizations have a strong commitment to the community’s youth, and are proud to host a memorable day of fishing. “Events like this fishing derby can be a great experience for kids and their families. I often hear parents tell me that their kids have taken an interest in fishing after participating in one of our derbies. Our hope is that this event will spur a life-long interest in nature and outdoor activities,” said Kari Kirschbaum, Ironton District wildlife biologist. “This event gives kids an opportunity to spend some time outside and to try a new activity, or to learn more about fishing. The great thing about fishing is that it is an activity that a family can enjoy together for a lifetime.”
