ROME TOWNSHIP — About 10 percent of the Union-Rome Township Sewer District relining project is completed.

Work to restore the 12.7 miles of sewers started in March, according to Doug Cade, engineer for E.L. Robinson.

“The purpose was to rehabilitate the sewers,” Cade said. “A lot of the system is old, especially some in West Chesapeake, Chesapeake and Proctorville. There is a lot of clay pipe and concrete pipe that had leaky joints and also was structurally deficient.”

This week crews from Miller Pipeline Inc., from Indianapolis, are televising and cleaning lines in the Chesapeake area and replacing the frame and cover of manholes in Rome Township.

“We are also coating inside the manholes to reduce the amount of ground water that enters the system that we have to treat,” Cade said.

The $3.9 million project is expected to be completed by February 2011 and was financed in part by ARRA stimulus money with the other half from a low-interest loan from the Ohio EPA Water Pollution Control Loan Fund.

For the next week manhole cover replacement in Proctorville will be between Holderby Lane and Cedar Street from Third to Seventh avenues; and in West Chesapeake it will be on Township Roads 1213, 1115, 1096 and 1079. Sewer cleaning will be on West Chesapeake East of Rosslyn Street and West of First Street; County Road 1 between Township Road 1411 and First Street and Brentwood Subdivision.
