AID — The “D” wasn’t for defense. It stood for “Downfall.”

Four errors and other mistakes were the difference as the Symmes Valley Vikings lost 5-2 Thursday to the South Webster Jeeps in the Division IV sectional tournament.

“They outplayed us defensively and that was the difference. We didn’t hit the ball all that well. (John) Morrisette pitched a good game,” said Vikings’ coach Chad Renfroe.

“(Kris) Tibbs pitched well enough to win. They only had a couple of hard hit balls. We just didn’t field it.”

Morrisette struck out 11, walked one, hit a batter and gave up just four hits to get the win. Tibbs allowed six hits, struck out three, walked three and hit two.

Tyler Easthom belted a two-out solo home run to stake the Vikings to a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

The Jeeps got two runs in the third inning to lead 2-1.

Brice Patterson and Zach Wright were hit by pitches, moved up on a passed ball and scored after a ground out and another passed ball.

South Webster got what proved to be the winning run in the fourth when Zach Wright singled, advanced on a passed ball and Josh Wright singled.

The Jeeps added single runs in the fifth and seventh innings to go up 5-2.

Symmes Valley didn’t score again until the seventh inning when Nathan Dockery doubled and came around to score on a pair of groundouts.

Symmes Valley ends the season 17-6 and Southern Ohio Conference Div. I champions.

“We had a good year and we’ve got a good nucleus to build on for next year,” said Renfroe.
