This event is hosted by Wayne National Forest and partnered with the Lawrence County Bass Club, Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife, Isaak Walton League, and Ohio University Southern Nature Center.

Youngsters are encouraged to pre-register by visiting or calling the Wayne National Forest Ironton Ranger District at (740) 534-6500, but can also register at the fishing derby from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m.

All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Participants should bring their own fishing pole, bucket, and bait if they have them.  Some poles and bait will be available for children who don’t have their own.

Participants are also encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather, including bringing a hat and sunscreen.

“Events like this fishing derby can be a great experience for kids and their families.  I often hear parents tell me that their kids have taken an interest in fishing after participating in one of our derbies.  Our hope is that this event will spur a life-long interest in nature and outdoor activities,” said Kari Kirschbaum, Ironton District Wildlife Biologist.

“This event gives kids an opportunity to spend some time outside and to try a new activity, or to learn more about fishing.  The great thing about fishing is that it is an activity that a family can enjoy together for a lifetime.”
