OAK HILL — There’s nothing to this pole vault thing.

In only his second varsity match this season, Coal Grove Hornets’ junior Jake Murphy cleared 10-feet, 6-inches to not only win the event but set a new district record originally held by a former Hornet Aaron Conley who went 10-feet last year.

Fellow Hornet Kyle Estep went 10-feet to finish second and give both vaulters a berth in the regional meet next Wednesday and Friday at Lancaster Fairfield Union High School.

Murphy’s first meet this season was last Friday at the Ohio Valley Conference meet when he vaulted 11-feet to place second. It was Murphy’s first attempt at the pole vault since the eighth grade.

The Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers’ 4×800-meter relay team also qualified for the regional meet with a third place finish.

The quartet of Ariel Schweickart, Taylor Hacker and Shannon and Colleen Walker ran a season-best 10:39.92 time.

Wheelersburg ran a district record 10:16.78 to win the event. South Webster was second, eight seconds ahead of Ironton.

The Hornets’ 4×800 relay team also placed third on the boys’ side as Jordan Beals, Bryan Steele, Jake Jewell and Jacob Pauley ran an 8:48.58 time. Racine Southern ran a district record 8:35.47 to win the race.

Coal Grove’s Aaron Dickess was third in the discus at 135-11 to earn a trip to the regionals. Boo Woods just missed qualifying as he finished fifth in the long jump at 19-6.5.

The top four finishers in each event qualifies for the regional meet.

The remainder of the district finals will be held Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. The Division II meet will hold finals starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, also at Oak Hill.
