The group’s name may include the word “young” but the fledgling civic group’s results and its vision for the future show that the members are wise beyond their years.

The Lawrence County Young Professionals group, an offshoot of the Greater Lawrence County Area Chamber of Commerce, emerged on the scene with a bang last year. Or, it may be precise to say, emerged with a “Ho, ho, ho.”

Only weeks after its inception, the group rallied to save the Secret Santa program, a long-time charitable effort that has helped thousands of families over the years. Formerly organized by the Department of Job and Family Services, cuts in state funding put this much-needed initiative in danger.

But the Young Professionals — and the entire community — rose to the challenge and saved this program. Because of them, 411 children had a little more Christmas cheer and happier holidays.

Now, the Young Professionals are at it again.

Last year, the organization had less than six months to put together the entire project. This year they are taking a six-month approach.

The group is already hard at work planning for the holiday efforts and will be having a Christmas in July of sorts.

Organizers are looking at a variety of fundraisers including a putt-putt golf scramble, a cornhole tournament and a community movie on an outdoor big screen that will recreate the drive in experience.

We applaud the effort by these young leaders of Lawrence County.

Hopefully, the community will support these projects and see that this group is about results, not age.
