Fairland West students shine in performance

ROME TOWNSHIP — The Fairland West Elementary fifth-grade classes presented their annual performances on Tuesday, May 11, 2010.

The early performance was for the student body, and the evening performance was for the parents and the public.

The musical, “Compose Yourself” highlighted the classical composers of the 18th and 19th centuries. Susan Dunfee, music teacher at the school conducted the performances.

“The students have been working hard, and have learned some beautiful songs such as ‘Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee’ and ‘Come Waltz With Me,’” Dunfee said. “The students will impress you with their knowledge of classical composers!”

The students who played the role of the composers are: J S Bach – Bethany Hamilton; Beethoven-Rebecca Stevenson; Brahms-Breanna Zirkle; Phillip Glass-Avery Gillam; Handel-Andrew Blatt; Haydn-Sam Harris; Mahler-Mckenna Aquasanta; Mendelssohn-Ashton McQuaid; Mozart-Michael Tubbs; Shubert-Alex Naegele; Strauss-Ty Staten; Stravinsky-Tyler Elliott; Richard Strauss-Michael Wentz; Tchaikovsky-Hunter Ashton; Verdi-Caelan Huff; Mussorgsky-Hannah Ward and Wagner-Bryson Bias.

Solos were performed by Becca Stevenson, Makenna Booth, Raven McClintock and Alex Ward. A piano solo of Beethoven’s Fur Elise was performed by Sydney Robinson. Ballerina dancers were: Sierra Clinton, Lexi Adkins, Ireland Maddox and Paige Meadows.

Students who danced a waltz were: Madison Workman, Sampson Johnson, Sydney Gallion, Tyler Elliott, Melindie Jarrell, Jonah Galloway, Kelly Begil, Tyler Rice, Madisyn Holderby, Jacob McComas, Mason Duncan, Jordan Christian, Felisha McFarland and Connor LaCroix. The sound system was operated by Gunner Short.

Students wore costumes of the time period when the greatest classical compositions were written. Parent volunteers who assisted Dunfee with props and costumes were: Kristen Mandt, Jennifer Ward, Angie George, Marlo Wentz and Cathy Brammer.
