I would like to address a recent letter to the editor, regarding stop signs in Ironton.

The latest three-way stop sign, erected at Fourth and Pleasant, has been needed for a long time. Pleasant Street is a main thoroughfare for the EMS squads as they answer emergency calls.

The squads routinely use Pleasant Street from 12th Street all the way to Third Street.

The sign at Fourth and Pleasant streets is also needed to provide safe crossing for children and senior citizens as they exit the Nazarene church on Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights.

Anyone who travels Fourth Street knows that many cars use that intersection in a given day.

It is only a matter of time, before a crash involving a child or an EMS squad occurs.

The city did not enter this decision lightly. There was a petition passed and more than 150 signatures were collected regarding this sign.

I disagree with the author’s notion that slowing people down in our city is a bad thing.

We want more children and young families to live in Ironton. This was one decision that helps protect them.

I say thanks to Mayor Rich Blankenship, city council and the city workers who put the signs up.
