LANCASTER — The Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers 4×800 relay team didn’t go to the state meet, but they did go into the record books.

The Lady Tigers’ team of Ariel Schweickart, Taylor Hacker, and Shannon and Colleen Walker finished 11th overall in the Division III regional track meet Wednesday at Fairfield Union High School, but they accomplished something in the process.

The quartet ran a 10:31.08 time to set a new school record. Hacker — who runs the anchor leg — all ready has a school record in the 1600-meter run.

“The competition here is really tough and they stepped up and had their best time of the year and set a school record in the process. I’m proud of them,” said Ironton coach Tim Thomas.

Ironton’s Lorna Ceaser also competed on the first day of the meet and finished seventh in the shot put with a heave of 35-4.5, just one-quarter inch out of sixth place.

In the boys’ pole vault, Coal Grove’s Jake Murphy went 10-feet to eighth. Teammate Kyle Estep went 9-6 and was 10th.

Coal Grove’s Aaron Dickess threw in the discus and finished 12th with a toss of 124-6. Isiah Kent of North Robinson set a new regional record as he won with a 184-8 throw.

The Hornets’ team of Jacob Pauley, Bryan Steele, Jake Jewell and Jordan Beals was 10th in the 4×800 relay with a time of 8:40.64.

Although not the finals, Coal Grove’s Oakie Haynes qualified for Friday’s finals in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Haynes had the best qualifying times in the 100 (11.25) and 200 (22.49).

The Hornets 4×100 relay team of Alex Bare, Jake Brown, Sebastian “Boo” Woods and Haynes was fourth at 44.67 to make the finals.

Others running in the preliminaries but failing to qualify for the finals were:

Coal Grove’s Shawn Morrison in the 110 hurdles (17.71), the 4×200 relay team of Brown, Evan Ferguson, Woods and Brad Hager (1:35.63).

The top four finishers in the finals of each event advance to next weekend’s state meet at the Ohio State University Jesse Owens’ Memorial Stadium.
