A representative from Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland’s office has told local organizers the governor plans to be in the 142nd Ironton-Lawrence County Memorial Day Parade on Monday.

Ohio Treasurer Kevin Boyce is expected to be in the parade as well.

Parade Committee Member Lou Pyles said she spoke to Strickland staffer Carolyn Jones earlier this week and was told the governor will be in the area during Memorial Day weekend and tentatively plans to be in Ironton for the parade.

This will be Strickland’s second appearance in the parade as governor; he made his first appearance in 2007.

The parade committee invited him in 2006 after he became governor but he could not attend. His wife, Frances, took his place.

The governor will walk in the first division with Grand Marshal Ella McCown, Parade Commander Angie Chamberlin and Honorary Grand Marshal Richard Walton.

This will be Boyce’s first time in the parade. He was appointed treasurer when Richard Cordray was elected attorney general.

Lawrence County Treasurer Stephen Dale Burcham said he had talked to Boyce several times since he became treasurer and invited him to be in the parade.

Burcham said Boyce’s visit was confirmed Wednesday.

“The more people we can get on the state level coming from Columbus can only mean good things for us,” Burcham said. “I’m excited he’s coming down.”

The visits by state dignitaries is welcome news to a parade committee that works months to make that one day in May go off without a hitch.

“It will be a great parade,” Pyles said. “We will have people from the state to join us. It’s going to be wonderful.”
