NELSONVILLE — In observance of National Trails Day on Saturday, June 5, the Wayne National Forest in southeastern Ohio invites the public to a free use weekend on June 5 and 6 on its designated trail system.

This is the same weekend as the Hanging Rock ATV Club’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Rally.

No Wayne National Forest trail permits are required to ride off-highway vehicle (OHV), horse, and mountain bike trails on that weekend.

Developed fee campgrounds and day-use sites are not included in this free use offer.

Motorized trail riders are still required to purchase their state all-purpose vehicle (APV) registration sticker from the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV).

The Wayne National Forest offers the public several trail opportunities. The Forest has approximately 79 miles of horse trails, 121 miles of all-terrain vehicle trails, 209 miles of mountain bike trails, and 347 miles of hiking trails.

The fee waiver weekend is being offered nationally in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and other agencies (National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Bureau of Land Management) under the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act (REA).

Since 1993, National Trails Day has inspired thousands of people to enjoy trails on the same day nationwide, taking part in hikes, bike and horse rides, trail maintenance, paddle trips and other activities.
