Will McCollister did a little shopping last week and he has a few more shopping trips planned.

The kind of shopping the Rock Hill Redmen junior quarterback is doing isn’t about any special occasion or getting an early jump on Christmas, unless it’s his own.

Having putting on 20 pounds since last season, the 6-foot-4, 215-pound McCollister attended The Ohio State football camp this past Sunday and drew the attention of the Buckeyes’ staff and college recruiting personnel in attendance.

Buckeyes’ quarterback coach Nick Siciliano was looking hard at Huber Heights’ Braxton Miller who is considered the No. 1 quarterback at the Senior Advanced camp, but McCollister caught the coach’s eye as well.

“They liked what they saw,” said Bob McCollister, Rock Hill assistant coach and Will’s father.

“They said he had good feet, a strong arm and he was athletic. The only real negative thing they said was to work on his release.”

Bill Kurelic — known as a top recruiting guru in Ohio — watched the camp workouts and grabbed the younger McCollister afterwards.

“I thought it was a good chance to get the coaches eyes on me and see what they thought,” McCollister told Bucknuts.com “I got to be seen by the best.”

Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel did see McCollister, but so did others in attendance such as Ohio coach Frank Solich who was standing with the Buckeyes’ head coach.

“At least he’s on the radar,” said Bob McCollister.

That radar appears to be reaching a little farther and farther all the time. After the Ohio State camp, McCollister made his way to a one-day camp at Cincinnati and a two-day stop at Indiana.

“UC was interested. They told us virtually the same thing as Ohio State,” said Bob McCollister.

Will McCollister — a 4.0 student who has thrown for more than 1,300 yards in each of the last two seaons — has been getting plenty of letters from other schools including Nebraska, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Michigan. Although Ohio State is at the top of his list, he’s keeping an open mind.

“I’m still open to other schools like Cincinnati, Notre Dame, Indiana, mostly big-time schools in the Midwest,” said Will.

Now that’s a nice shopping list.
