First Baptist Church sponsoring blood drive

IRONTON — The First Baptist Church of Ironton is sponsoring a blood drive Thursday, from noon to 5 p.m.

The event will be in the Faith & Fitness located at 400 Vernon St. in Ironton.

Spotlight on author Patricia Cornwell

SUMMIT, Ky. — Author Patricia Cornwell is in the spotlight at this month’s author discussion program at the Summit Branch of Boyd County Public Library.

Spotlight on the Author takes place Monday, June 28, at 5:15 p.m. at the branch, 1016 Summit Road.

This will be the final installment of this program.

Starting in August, the Summit Branch will be hosting “From Page to Reel,” a monthly look at a book and its movie version, on the second Wednesday. The first one, “The Other Boleyn Girl” by Philippa Gregory, is Aug. 11.

The library has three book clubs that discuss specific books each month, and are always open to new members.

The one at Catlettsburg meets on the second Tuesday at 5 p.m.

The book club at the Main Branch meets on the final Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. Another group, Novel-Tea, also meets at Main, on the last Monday at 1 p.m.

ACTC offers lifelong learning

ASHLAND, Ky. — Because we live in an ever-changing world with new technologies and skills to learn every year, Ashland Community and Technical College provides noncredit learning opportunities to enrich our lives and improve our future.

Lifelong Learning offers short-term classes to help develop new interests, refine career skills, prepare for advancement and expand our horizons.

Adults can find classes that emphasize practical skills and knowledge that can be used immediately at home or on the job.

Children and teens can explore new subjects, develop their abilities and talents, and discover the joy of learning.

“Our goal is to build partnerships with community organizations to expand classes for area residents and businesses,” said Karen Coburn, Lifelong Learning Coordinator. “We plan to expand offerings for teenagers and adult learners ages 50 and up in the next year.”

Class sizes are limited to provide optimum learning opportunities, and modest class fees are designed to provide quality instruction and required materials.
