The Lawrence County 4-H Horse Committee hosted a clinic and quality assurance day for participants with horse projects.

The day was designed to provide an encouraging, positive learning experience. It was followed up with an Open Youth Horse Show, which gave the youth who attended the clinic an opportunity to use what they learned.

The clinic portion allowed the students to work with knowledgeable adults in the areas of Barrels, Poles, Western Showmanship, Hunter Under Saddle, English Showmanship, Horsemanship, Pleasure, & Hunter Equitation.

They also had two informative sessions concerning proper care of the horses. Dr. Steve Walker, Veterinarian, discussed diseases, vaccinations and other health related responsibilities for owners.

The students met with a nutritionist. They discussed the proper way to score a horse based on the horse’s body condition, and nutritional needs based on those scores. Both information sessions were followed with a question & answer session.

The Open Youth Horse Show consisted of 17 classes, 13 of which were taught during the early part of day. The remaining four classes were fun flasses that consisted of Egg & Spoon, Ride a Buck, Costume Class (Horse, Rider, or Both), and the Apple Race, which is ran in teams.
