It was a steady flow of sightseers who were greeted Saturday morning by staff of King’s Daughters Medical Center at an open house for its new Ironton Family Care.

By noon more than 300 had come through the doors of the two-story health care facility for tours, free health screenings or snacking on a specially catered buffet under a tent on the grounds of the center.

“It’s a beautiful place, a real nice location,” Kayla Hayes of Winfield, W.Va., said. “It’s very convenient and easy to access.”

Nearby Garnet Worthington of Ironton was enjoying the luncheon and pleased with the new center.

“It is wonderful,” she said. “It is close and that is real good.”

Throughout the morning new and possible future patients took advantage of free blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar screening, as well as seeing some dramatic examples of health problems on storyboard displays.

“A lot of existing patients want to see this center as do new patients,” according to Tom Deering of KDMC’s public relations department. “And a lot of the community has come just to say it makes a nice entrance to the city.”

The 16,500-square-foot, two-level facility opened its doors to patients on June 14 at 912 Park Ave. The staff from the original facility on Vernon Street moved to the new location, including Dr. Tony Virgin; and nurse practitioners Gretchen Horner, Ronda Nickoson and Elizabeth Spurlock.

The center features, in addition to primary care, on-site laboratory, X-ray and CT scan capabilities, mobile mammography and mobile MRI.

A Home Medical Equipment store is available adjacent to the Family Care Center with operating hours 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Products include walkers, crutches, wheelchairs, orthopedic bracing and nebulizers.

The store is the result of patient growth at the Vernon Street center, Deering said.

“We thought Ironton was a good match,” he said.

Hours for the family care center are 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
