Huntington woman ID’ed as crash victim

CHESAPEAKE — A Huntington, W.Va., woman was the victim of a single-car accident early Monday morning.

Jessica C. Minter, 37, was the driver and sole occupant of the car that crashed on County Road 559 or Big Branch Road, according to Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Minter, whose name had not been immediately released pending notification of family, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Lt. Michael Gore of the Ironton Post.

The accident occurred at 4:36 a.m. Monday. Minter was driving a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Alcohol was suspected, Gore said. Investigating the accident was Highway Patrol Trooper, Chad Canter.

Farmers Market to host weed expert

Do you have a weed, be it herb, shrub or tree, that knows no bounds, that strangles crops, whose roots captures all your fertilizer and even worse, stinks? Put a name on that problem.

Saturday, July 10, the Iron Furnace Cooperative Weed Management Area will have a representative at the Ironton Farmers Market located next to Austyn’s restaurant to identify weeds.

Bring a sample, a photo, whatever you think will be helpful.

Samples will also be put out with the expectation that seeing will trigger recognition. Books will be present, if needed, and information about resources that are available to help with unwanted, invasive plants. There will be no charge for this service.

Market hours are 6:30 a.m. until produce is sold out.

Forest service dredges Vesuvius boat launch

PEDRO — The Wayne National Forest has hired a local equipment operator to dredge the Vesuvius boat launch.

The 5-inch rainfall on May 2 filled the launch area with rock and sand, reducing the depth to less than one foot at the launch.

“Boaters have struggled the last two months trying to launch on the lake” Assistant District Ranger Marsha Wikle said. “We’ve been waiting on emergency funds, but decided to move ahead with a small piece of equipment to see if we could move enough debris to make a difference.”

The launch depth is now estimated at 4 feet, allowing most boats to successfully enter the lake. “We’ll be coming back in with larger equipment to finish the job, but this is a big improvement that will help in the meantime,” according to Wikle.
