ORLANDO, Fla. — As if emotions aren’t high enough on a honeymoon, J.J. Redick was on edge awaiting word in Europe on whether the Orlando Magic would match an offer Chicago made for the restricted free agent.

“My gut feeling changed about seven times during that week,” Redick said.

It was only fitting that the culmination of his remarkable NBA turnaround would occur in such fashion. After all, nothing has come easy in the NBA for Redick.

But the work has paid off.

The former Duke standout is getting more than $19 million for the next three seasons to remain with the Magic, the same team that once benched him. Now with Vince Carter signed for only one more season, Redick will likely have the opportunity in the coming years to be a starter.

“I think I can start on a lot of teams. I don’t think I’ll start on this team (now), and I’m OK with that,” Redick said Monday. “I’d be lying to say that I don’t want to start at some point.”

Nowitzki signs new deal

DALLAS (AP) — Nine-time All-Star Dirk Nowitzki has signed his new contract with the Dallas Mavericks.

The Mavericks announced the signing in a statement issued Monday. Team officials released no terms of the deal. However, a person familiar with the negotiations had told The Associated Press when the agreement was reached earlier this month that the deal is for more than $80 million over four years, with a no-trade clause.

At 32, Nowitzki had opted out of the final year of his contract to become an unrestricted free agent for the first time, but he didn’t talk seriously with any other teams.

The 12-year NBA veteran has averaged 22.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists, one block and 36.7 minutes in 920 career games. In 97 playoff games, Nowitzki averages 25.5 points, 11 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.2 steals and 1 block per game.

Heat sign two

MIAMI (AP) — Center Jamaal Magloire has re-signed with the Miami Heat for the coming season.

It’ll be the third season Magloire spends with Miami, which wanted him back to bolster its depth inside. Magloire has averaged 7.7 points and 6.7 rebounds per game in his 10 NBA seasons with one All-Star appearance.

Magloire averaged 2.1 points and 3.4 rebounds, while shooting 50.4 percent from the field in 23 games as a reserve for Miami last season.

James Jones completed his return to the Miami Heat, signing Monday with the team that bought out his contract last month.

The South Florida native decided last week that he didn’t want to play anywhere else, especially after Miami wildly reshaped its roster by adding LeBron James, Chris Bosh, Mike Miller and others while keeping Dwyane Wade and Udonis Haslem.

Jones was the NBA’s third-best 3-point shooter in 2007-08. In two seasons with Miami, he’s appeared in 76 games, averaging 4.1 points and shooting nearly 38 percent from 3-point range.
