ENGLEWOOD — It was a good ride.

The Rock Hill Senior League All-Stars tournament run came to an end at the state tournament, but not before the local stars put together a season that finished as third in the National Senior League tournament.

Rock Hill — finished 16-2 on the season — won its opening game at the state tournament by beating Lorain West Carrollton 11-7.

They lost 10-0 in five innings to eventual state champion Highland East Holmes. Faced with a second game in the same day, Rock Hill lost a heartbreaker 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning to Maumee.

Highland routed Maumee 24-2 to win the state title.

“Our kids played with class. All the kids accepted their roles. They played their hearts out and never gave up,” said Rock Hill coach John Schob.

“We’d like to wish Highland East Holmes luck through the rest of the tournament. They were a real good team.”

In the first game, West Carrolton took a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning, but Rock Hill answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning and two in the third to tie the game.

Cody Roberts singled, Heath Markel walked and Aaron Dalton had a two-run single in the second. In the third, Jonathan Schob doubled, Evan Morris was hit by a pitch and Roberts had a two-run double.

Rock Hill took the lead for good with three runs in the fourth inning.

Tyler Blagg was hit by a pitch, Nick McGuire had a bunt single, and Kyle Morris had a two-run single. Drew Kidd followed with an RBI single.

After West Carrollton score two in the top of the fifth, Rock Hill answered with two of its own in the bottom of the frame when Morris singled, Blagg was hit by a pitch and McGuire had a two-run single.

Rock Hill got two insurance runs in the sixth on a walk to Matt Jenkins and a two-run homer by Schob.

For the game, Schob pitched six innings to get the win and went 3-for-4 with a triple and a home run. Morris was 2-4 as nine different players collected hits for Rock Hill.

On Tuesday, Highland East Holmes posted a 10-0 win behind some clutch pitching and 11 hits. Rock Hill had eight hits in the loss.

“We hit the ball right to them or we’d hit the gaps and they’d run them down,” said coach Schob.

In the second game on Tuesday, Rock Hill was unable to hold the lead in the bottom of the seventh after going up 5-4 in the top of the inning.

“They hit a few bloopers and there was nothing we could do,” said coach Schob.

Rock Hill’s Matt Jenkins belted a solo home run in the first inning to give Rock Hill a 1-0 lead.

Rock Hill took a 2-1 lead in the third when Nick McGuire singled, Ryan Depriest bunted for a hit, Drew Kidd singled and Jenkins got an RBI single.

In the fifth, Depriest singled, stole second base and came home on a hit by Kidd and it was 3-1.

Maumee scored three runs in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead, but Rock Hill regained the lead with two runs in the seventh.

Kidd singled to lead off the inning and Jenkins also had a hit. After a fielder’s choice, Schob singled and Evan Moore had an RBI single. Schob went to third on a passed ball and Roberts hit a sacrifice fly.

But Maumee combined some clutch hits and a few breaks to rally for the win.

Coach Schob also thanked the fans that made the trip and anyone who helped support the team financially as well.

“We traveled well. We had a big following and we want to thank everyone,” said Schob.
