Ironton golfers 3rd at PIT

PORTSMOUTH — It was the kind of day the Ironton Fighting Tigers would have liked to have taken a mulligan.

Ironton didn’t have a golfer break 80 and finished third Thursday in the Portsmouth Invitational.

After winning their own invitational by 27 strokes on Monday and shooting a 305 as a team, Ironton managed a 325 total, one stroke behind runner-up Gallipolis and five shots off winner Logan Elm.

Josh Cooke bounced back from an 89 on Monday to lead Ironton with an 18-hole score of 80. Andy Holtzapfel and Josh Zornes were one shot back at 81 while Jonathon Williams and Mason Weisgarber each carded an 83.

West Union was fourth at 335 and the Chesapeake Panthers were fifth with a 338-team score.

The Panthers’ Nick Duffield shot a 76 to finish fifth overall in the individual standings and teammate Seth Waggoner tied for seventh with a 79 score.

The Fighting Tigers (27-2) travels to Greenup County, Ky., Monday for a 4 p.m. match.
