COAL GROVE — Get out that flour and sugar and get ready to bake. It’s time again for the annual block party — and cake and pie contest — at Coal Grove Memorial United Methodist Church. The event will be noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at the church.

“It’s just a whole afternoon of fun and fellowship right out on the church lawn,” Brad Jenkins, the church’s pastor, said. “This is the eighth year we’ve had it. We always have a great response.”

The event, which is free, usually draws between 100 and 150 throughout the day.

“It’s just a way of reaching out to the community and the people around,” said Carol Gool, who serves on the outreach committee of the church. “It’s open to the public.”

The block party will feature inflatables, games, a corn hole tournament, a health fair from Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital and of course, the cake and pie contest.

“It’s a very popular event especially to the members of the church,” Jenkins said of the contest. “They always look forward to it and are trying out new recipes.”

The health fair will include blood sugar screenings among other tests.

Local businesses from Coal Grove and Ashland have provided prizes for the winners of the pie and cake contest and the corn hole tournament.

“We want to thank them for their generosity,” Gool said of the businesses.

Jenkins encouraged people to come to the event.

“I know they’ll have a great time and meet great people and hopefully experience the love of Christ throughout the day.”

The church is located at 222 Memorial Street in Coal Grove.
