Rep. Evans to have public meetings

COLUMBUS — State Rep. Clyde Evans (R- Rio Grande) will be holding open door public meetings for constituents in southern Ohio.

The meetings will provide an opportunity for the general public to discuss their views and opinions with Rep. Evans on state government issues.

The following meeting will be held at the following time on Wednesday, September 1st:

9 a.m. at the Cheshire Village Hall, in Gallia County

12 noon at the Chesapeake Branch of the Briggs Lawrence County Library

The following meetings will be held at the following times on Thursday, Sept. 2nd:

9 a.m. at the Community Building in McArthur, in Vinton County

11 a.m. at the Oak Hill Library, in Jackson County

2 p.m. at the Community Building, in Richmond Dale

SSU auditions set for fall theater production

PORTSMOUTH — Auditions for Alfred Uhry’s “The Last Night of Ballyhoo” will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 7 and Wednesday, Sept. 8 at the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts Kahl Studio Theatre.

The roles for three males and four females are needed for the play that will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 12 and Saturday, Nov. 13 in the Kahl Theatre.

Actors should have a two-minute memorized contemporary monologue from existing theatre literature prepared for the audition.

“The Last Night of Ballyhoo” takes place in Atlanta, Georgia, in December of 1939. “Gone with the Wind” is having its world premiere, and Hitler is invading Poland, but Atlanta’s elitist German Jews are much more concerned with who is going to Ballyhoo, the social event of the season.

Especially concerned is the Freitag family, bachelor Adolph, his widowed sister, Beulah (Boo) Levy, and their also widowed sister-in-law, Reba. Boo is determined to have her dreamy, unpopular daughter, Lala, attend Ballyhoo, believing it will be Lala’s last chance to find a socially acceptable husband.

The play was the winner of the 1997 Tony Award for Best Play and described as a “delightful comedy freighted with an uncomfortable message” by the New York Post. Uhry is also author of “Driving Miss Daisy.”

Constitution day program set for Sept. 17

ASHLAND, Ky. — Ashland Community and Technical College and Morehead State University at Ashland will celebrate Constitution Day on Friday, Sept. 17, with a free program on the meaning of the U. S. Constitution.

Speaker Kerry Harvey is general counsel and acting inspector general for the Commonwealth of Kentucky in the Cabinet for Health and Family Services.

The program is open to the public and will begin at 11:00 a.m. in the J. B. Sowards Theatre at the College Drive Campus Teleconference Room.
