Ironton vs. Wheelersburg

WHEELERSBURG — Tyler Hager ran 51 yards for a touchdown and Tres Wilks raced 72 yards for a score as the Ironton Fighting Tigers beat the Wheelersburg Pirates 12-7 Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

After Ironton took a 12-0 lead with 10:40 left in the third quarter, Wheelersburg drove 67 yards in 11 plays capped by Alex Shears 1-yard run. Dillan Lewis kicked the conversion point.

Both teams had defensive stops. Ironton held the Pirates on downs at the 20-yard line to start the game and the Pirates forced the Fighting Tigers to give up the ball at the 25 on downs with the help of two penalties.

Wheelersburg had one final chance to win, but Skylar Fields sacked Shears for an 8-yard loss on a fourth-and-9 at the Ironton 36 with 2:31 to play.

Ironton had 216 total yards — all on the ground — as Wilks ran for 84, Hager 60 and Brian Warner 58.

Brandon Schankweiler ran for 88 yards to lead the Pirates. Tommy Graf added 58 yards. Shears was 4-of-7 passing for 72 yards.

Coal Grove vs. Meigs

POMEROY — Boo Woods ran eight times for 147 yards and the Coal Grove Hornets racked up 309 rushing yards in a 53-13 rout of the Meigs Marauders Friday.

Woods was one of 14 Hornets to carry the ball. Dion Cunningham had seven carries for 49 yards and a score and Greg Bender had 45 yards on six attempts and a score. Woods ran for two touchdowns.

Coal Grove’s defense held Meigs to 144 total yards including 110 on the ground.

Zane Trace vs. Rock Hill

PEDRO — Nick Ganus kicked a 22-yard field goal with about eight minutes to play to give the Zane Trace Pioneers an 18-15 come-from-behind win over the Rock Hill Redmen Friday.

Rock Hill took a 15-0 lead when quarterback Will McCollister ran 81 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the game and Steve Lewis added a 5-yard scoring run.

Zane Trace got within 15-8 at the half, tied the game in the second half and won on the Ganus’ field goal.

Chesapeake vs. Oak Hill

OAK HILL — Westen Hale ran 18 times for 116 yards to become the school’s all-time leading rusher as the Oak Hill Oaks beat the Chesapeake Panthers 35-7 Friday.

The Panthers took a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter on a 7-yard pass from Austin McMaster to Brandon Noble.

But the Oaks rallied as Hale scored three touchdowns and quarterback Jesse Slone hit 10-of-18 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns. Joey Maynard had three receptions for 96 yards.

Patrick Hintz rushed 13 times or 76 yards to lead the Panthers.

Portsmouth West vs. Fairland

PROCTORVILLE — The Portsmouth West Senators scored 27 points off the kicking game en route to a 46-16 win over the Fairland Dragons Friday.

Trevon Pendleton ran 12 times for 107 yards including a 68-yard touchdown run to put West up 7-0 in the first quarter.

Fairland took an 8-7 lead on a 49-yard pass from Chad Fisher to Eric Riley and Fisher’s conversion pass to Kyle Lawhorn.

But Pendleton returned the kickoff 83 yards for a touchdown to give West the lead for good.

A bad snap on a punt led to a fumble recovery by Kyle Auger in the end zone for a West touchdown. A fumbled punt at the 1-yard line led to a scoring run by Jerrod Bricker.

The Dragons lost tackle Adam Lee with a knee injury and wide receiver Cody Midkiff to a broken leg.

Southern vs. Symmes Valley

WILLOW WOOD — The Symmes Valley Vikings rushed for 344 yards and rolled past the Racine Southern Tornadoes 39-13 Friday.

Evan Herrell ran seven times for 107 yards and two touchdowns and also caught a touchdown pass to lead the Vikings’ offense.

Hunter Boggs scored three touchdowns and the Vikings’ first team defense held Southern to minus yards rushing.

Zach Beegle led Southern with 76 yards rushing on 21 carries, but he lost 50 yards in sacks or tackles for a loss.
