POMEROY — If you can’t go inside, then go outside.

The Meigs Marauders stacked the line of scrimmage trying to stop Coal Grove fullback Bubba Wood. Hornets’ coach Dave Lucas countered with the speed of tailback Boo Woods who ran outside.

And ran and ran and ran.

Woods ran eight times for 147 yards and a touchdown to lead the Hornets past Meigs Friday in the season opener for both teams.

“They had nine men inside and they gave us the outside,” said Lucas. “We have enough speed to get out there.”

Coal Grove drove 58 yards in 10 plays capped by a 1-yard plunge by quarterback Alex Bare and it was 6-0.

Austin Clark picked up a Meigs’ fumble and ran it 25 yards to the 1-yard line where Greg Bender scored on the next play and the Hornets’ lead was 12-0.

Woods bolted 48 yards for a touchdown with 1:54 left in the quarter and Wood added the extra point for a 19-0 lead.

Wood had a 1-yard run to start the second half and it was 25-0.

Cameron Bolin caught a 26-yard pass to the 1-yard line that set up his touchdown run and Meigs now trailed 25-6.

But Bare threw a 59-yard pass to Bryan Steele for a touchdown and Bare ran for the conversion to make it 33-6.

Bender got his second score on a 7-yard run and Wood kicked the point after for a 40-6 lead. Dion Cunningham had a 1-yard touchdown run to make it 47-6 and the Hornets’ second unit finished up.

Cunningham ran for 49 yards and Bender 45 as Coal Grove racked up 309 yards rushing and 368 total yards. Meigs was held to 144 total yards.

“We played well. We still have a ways to go. We’ll have a tougher game next week,” said Lucas.

Coal Grove comes home to play Athens who was 9-1 last year and lost a high-scoring 36-21 decision to a veteran Gallipolis Friday.
