Fighting Tiger golfers win match at Gallia

GALLIPOLIS — The Cliffside Curse is no more.

The Ironton Fighting Tigers’ golf team ended a three-year losing streak at the Cliffside Country Club as they won a quad match Tuesday.

The trio of Andy Holtzapfel, Mason Weisgarber and Josh Cooke all shot rounds of 40 on the hilly par 36 course to lead the Fighting Tigers to a 161-team score. Josh Zornes was just one shot back at 41.

Host Gallipolis shot a 171 while River Valley had a 205 and Wahama, WV, 208.

“This is the first road win at Cliffside for this group of players,” said Ironton coach Jeff Kerns.

“We are obviously playing very well right now and getting consistent contributions from all players.”

Josh Mullins carded a 44 and Jonathan Williams had a 48 to round out Ironton’s team play.

Gallipolis’ Corey Arthur shot a 3-over 39 to take medalist honors, one shot better than Ironton’s trio.

The Fighting Tigers host Gallipolis, Greenup County and Wheelersburg in a 4 p.m. quad match Wednesday, then start a string of four straight road matches including a trip to Jackson on Thursday.
