SOUTH POINT — The South Point Pointers used a balanced rushing attack and amassed 372 yards en route to a 48-20 win over the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Crusaders from Mississauga, Ontario Canada.

“We our proud of the kids tonight for coming out and executing the game plan that the coaches put into place,” South Point head coach Doug Shilot said. “After we got settled in, I thought the offense and defense both played well.”

The Pointers got the scoring started early in the game when the offense took their first possession 83 yards in eight plays highlighted by a 40-yard touchdown run by quarterback Tevin Mitchell. R.J. McCarty ran in the two-point conversion and the score was 8-0 with 8:02 to go in the first.

South Point (1-1) got good field position when the Mt. Carmel running back Larry Broni was stripped and the Pointers recovered at the Crusaders 29. South Point extended the lead when Mitchell found Kyle Dickess for a nine yard score on a fourth down play. The two-point conversion was no good, and the score was 14-0 with 3:53 to go in the first.

After a Crusaders punt, South Point started their next drive at their own 45. The drive spilled over into the second quarter and the eight-play, 55-yard drive was capped off with a Larry Brandon two-yard run. Mitchell’s pass to Trey Campbell converted the two-point try, and the score was 22-0 with 11:21 to go in the half.

After an option pitch from Mount Carmel quarterback Kelvin Muamba went straight up in the air, the Pointers recovered and started their next drive at the Crusaders’ 35.

Seven plays later, Brandon found the end zone for the second time in the first half, this score coming from 5 yards out. Mitchell threw to Brandon for the conversion and the lead ballooned to 30-0 with 6:46 to go in the first half.

Brandon finished the game with 107 yards on 18 carries with two scores.

After trading turnovers, Mount Carmel got on the scoreboard when receiver Tyrell Rogers made an acrobatic one-handed catch while tip-toeing the back of the end zone from 30 yards out. Ruben Pinteus added the extra-point and the score was 30-7 at the half.

After forcing a Mount Carmel punt to open the second half, the Pointers went on another long drive.

The 13-play, 62-yard drive ate 6:28 off the third quarter clock and was capped off when Mitchell found Campbell for a 19-yard score. The conversion failed and the score was 36-7 with 2:55 to go in the third.

Mitchell finished the game with 63 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown. He was also 3 of 4 passing for 57 yards and two scores.

South Point would again force a Mount Carmel punt, but no long scoring drive was need this time for the Pointers to extend the lead.

Campbell fielded the punt off a high bounce and weaved his way through traffic and broke several tackles for a 64-yard punt return touchdown and it was 42-7 at the end of the quarter.

Will Hill added another touchdown for the Pointers midway through the fourth quarter from 5 yards out and a 48-7 lead with 5:53 to go.

Hill finished the game with 73 yards on eight carries with a touchdown.

Mount Carmel would add two touchdowns late in the game when Muamba ran in from 3 yards out and Pinteus added the extra point, and Broni scored from 36 yards out to set the final score at 48-20.

The South Point defense held the wide-open Crusaders offense to only 195 yards.

Kyle Dickess added 57 yards on eight carries and had one reception for 9 yards with a score.
