The Streak Is Over

CHESAPEAKE — The last time Symmes Valley beat Chesapeake in football, none of the players in Saturday night’s game had even been born.

But a 21-year losing streak to Chesapeake finally ended as the unbeaten Vikings were reborn with a 27-12 win over the Panthers.

The Vikings (3-0) built a 21-0 halftime lead and were never headed, unlike last year when they had a 7-point lead late in the game only to lose 39-33 in triple overtime.

“I’m happy for this group of seniors. They had to play as freshmen and they’ve had to hear it for the past three years,” said Vikings’ coach Rusty Webb.

“We shook off all that stuff. The kids were mentally and physically ready. They prepared all week and they have been that way all year.”

The Vikings used a balanced offense to rack up 331 yards including 240 yards on 48 carries. Evan Herrell had 87 yards on nine carries and quarterback Cody Myers added 45 yards on 10 tries and also completed 6-of-8 passing for 91 yards. He also ran for two scores.

“It was a total team effort. I wish I could point to one kid, but I’m afraid I’d leave someone out,” said Webb. “Our front eight guys (on defense) did a super job against their offense.”

Herrell had a 50-yard run early in the game to trigger a 5-play, 77-yard drive capped by D.J. Miller’s 4-yard run. Eli Ash kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

Chesapeake (0-3) fumbled the ball away on its next possession and the Vikings recovered at midfield.

Symmes Valley took advantage of the turnover to score on a 10-yard keeper by Myers with 9:39 left in the half. Myers passed to Jacob Patterson for the conversion and it was 15-0.

Another turnover set up the Vikings’ next score as Miller picked off a Chesapeake pass and returned it to the Panthers’ 28.

Three plays later Myers ran 1-yard for the score and it was 21-0.

“They played harder than we did. Give them credit,” said Panthers’ coach Phil Davis. “We did not have a great effort and we had no reason not to. They just out-played us.”

Neither team scored in the third quarter and then the Vikings failed to get a first down on a fourth-and-1 at their own 44.

The Panthers used nine plays to score with quarterback Austin McMaster going the final 5 yards on a fourth down play and it was 21-6 with 9:00 left.

But the Vikings answered with a 7-play, 66-yard scoring drive to ice the game.

Herrell had a 29-yard reception to key the drive and brother Alec Herrell ran 12 yards for the touchdown with 6:20 to go and it was 27-6.

Chesapeake got its second touchdown on an 11-yard pass from McMaster to Jon Pinson on fourth down to cap a 10-play, 57-yard drive aided by a pass interference penalty.

The Panthers were limited to 120 total yards.
