Fairland Dragons’ senior quarterback Chad Fisher (4) runs for a big gain against the Wheelersburg defense. The Pirates outscored Fairland 42-22.

PROCTORVILLE — Offense wasn’t a problem for either team. Turnovers were.

The Fairland Dragons suffered four costly turnovers — two fumbles and two interceptions — in a 42-22 loss to the Wheelersburg Pirates Friday.

“Turnovers are what got us. We moved the ball,” said Fairland coach Dave Carroll as his team racked up 471 yards of total offense, one more than the Pirates.

Fairland quarterback Chad Fisher did most of the damage against the Pirates as he ran 20 times for 153 yards and completed 16-of-21 passing for 267 yards and two scores.

But Brandon Schankweiler hurt the Dragons as he ran just nine times for 195 yards and three touchdown. Quarterback Alex Shears had 95 yards rushing including a TD and was 4-of-8 passing for 124 yards and a touchdown.

“Schankweiler is the real deal. He’s good,” said Carroll.

Schankweiler ran 4 yards for a touchdown to put the Pirates up 7-0 in the first quarter.

Moments later, Dakota Luster intercepted a pass and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown as Wheelersburg (2-2) took a 14-0 lead.

The lead went to 20-0 with 5:17 left in the half when Schankweiler broke free on a 74-yard scoring run.

The Dragons (1-3) reached the 5-yard line with time running out in the half and no time outs remaining.

“Our kids played hard. If we put that one in at the end of the first half, it’s a different ball game. We just ran out of time,” said Carroll.

Schankweiler had a 1-yard touchdown run less than two minutes into the third quarter and Tommy Graf’s conversion run made it 28-0.

Fairland came right back to score as Fisher hooked up with Jon Baise on an 86-yard touchdown pass and it was 28-6.

But the Pirates answered with their own scoring pass as Shears found Andy Stegman on a 23-yard play and it was 35-6.

The fast-pace scoring in the quarter continued as Fisher and Baise teamed up on a 47-yard TD play. Fisher threw to Jonathan Holbrook for the conversion and it was 35-14.

Shears came back with a 26-yard scoring run and Dillan Lewis kicked the conversion to make it 42-14 just before the end of the quarter.

Fisher’s 55-yard touchdown run with 2:37 to play capped the scoring.
