Hornets must control ball against Greenup

COAL GROVE — Are the Greenup County Musketeers more like…
A. Meigs, B. Athens, C. Lucasville Valley, D. Trimble.
Hornets’ coach Dave Lucas has another answer.
E. All of the above.
Lucas was looking over the Musketeers run-oriented offensive style that mixes power and speed plus physical linemen.
“(Greenup) is a mixture of all of them,” said Lucas. “They’re a little bigger than Trimble and their line is better than it was last year, and they’ve got two kids who are pretty nice runners. One is pretty quick and the other is a hard runner,” said Lucas.
Last week the Hornets shut down Trimble’s Tyler Dyla and they get another test this week against Greenup County’s Corey Lyle.
In a 60-34 win over Raceland a few weeks ago, Lyle ran 19 times for a school-record 334 yards and six touchdowns. The old school record was 272 yards by Rashard Carter that was set last year against Coal Grove.
However, most of Carter’s yardage came against the Hornets’ second team defense.
The Musketeers’ wishbone offense gained 355 yards rushing on 42 carries earlier this season against Ashland. It also features Brandon Marsh and quarterback Mason Rister who run behind a big, strong offensive line.
In the 44-28 loss to Ashland in the season opener, the game was tied at 28 early in the fourth quarter but the Musketeers had three turnovers plus a bad snap on a punt over the final 10 minutes.
The Hornets (3-1) also like to run the football with Boo Woods, Bubba Wood, Greg Bender and Jake Murphy. Lucas said execution will be the key.
“The key will be to maintain control of the football,” said Lucas. “They’re a big play team. That’s kind of unusual for a wishbone team, but they score on big plays.”
Another key could be turnovers and field position. So far, the Hornets have done a good job this season handing onto the football.
“We’ve had some strange and odd fumbles, but not from our running backs. We had a turnover after a catch once, and we were long-snapping and it slipped out of our hands,” said Lucas.
Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.
