George D. McKnight, 65, of Ironton, formerly of Coal Grove, passed away Monday, Oct. 4, 2010, at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky. The Ironton native was born Dec. 1, 1944, the son of the late Bernard and Leora Thacker McKnight.

George was a 1962 graduate of Dawson-Bryant High School and a former security guard for Standard Slag in Ashland, Ky. He was also a member of Zoar Missionary Baptist Church and had been in the National Guard.

In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by two sisters, Sybil Keeney and Susan Nicholas.

He is survived by brother and sister-in-law, Bernard “Tom” and Linda McKnight of Coal Grove; three aunts and an uncle, Mary Alice McClain of Texas, Pauline Fields of Grove City and Phyllis and Lloyd Richmond of Coal Grove; nine nieces and nephews, Kevin and Sue Keeney, Kathi Keeney and Lee Ann Keeney, all of Ironton; Tomilynne and Todd Blankenship and Kyle McKnight, all of Coal Grove; Shelli and Chris Bauer of Lithia, Fla., Don, Amy, and Ken Nicholas, all of Seattle, Wash.; several great nieces, nephews, and numerous cousins and friends.

A memorial service will be 1 p.m. today at Coal Grove Memorial United Methodist Church with Pastor Brad Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens and friends may call today from noon until the time of the service at the church.
