Vikings hammer Tartans

SCIOTOVILLE — The Symmes Valley Vikings decided against a jump-start. They went with a kick-start instead.

The Vikings got off to a fast start and didn’t let up as they remained unbeaten with a 54-22 romp of the Sciotoville East Tartans Friday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.

“The last two weeks we’ve not started the game off well. It took us until the second half so we had a talk about it,” said Vikings’ coach Rusty Webb. “The kids did a super job of getting themselves ready to play.”

In their best offensive output of the season, the Vikings amassed 681 total yards with 553 coming on the ground on just 34 attempts.

Evan Herrell had 84 yards on four carries and D.J. Miller 71 on four attempts to pace the Vikings’ first team. Reserve running back Tyler Rowe had 146 yards on five carries.

Quarterback Cody Myers was 5-of-7 passing for 128 yards and two touchdowns.

East (2-5, 0-2) was held in check with 199 total yards — all on the ground — and the Tartans had just three first downs and less than 50 yards against the Vikings’ first unit.

“The defense played extremely well. We couldn’t ask any more from our kids,” said Webb.

A 26-yard punt return by Jacob Patterson set up a 3-yard scoring run by Miller as the Vikings took a 6-0 lead with 3:37 left in the first quarter.

After forcing a punt, the Vikings went 45 yards in just two plays with Patterson running 10 yards for the score and he also ran for the conversion to make it 14-0.

Herrell had a 44-yard run to set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Hunter Boggs and Eli Ash kicked the extra point to make it 21-0 with 8:34 left in the half.

Miller bolted 64 yards on the Vikings’ next possession to the 8-yard line where Myers threw to Patterson for the score. Myers kicked the conversion and it was 28-0.

Herrell came up with an interception and the Vikings went 70 yards in four plays with Myers and Patterson hooking up on a 36-yard scoring play and it was 35-0 just before the half.

Alec Herrell shook loose for a 52-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second half and the lead grew to 42-0.

The backups took over and Austin Owens ran 21 yards for the score as the Vikings lead was now 48-0.

East scored on a 79-yard run by Cody Stiltner in the fourth quarter and Tyler Bradford ran for the conversion.

The Vikings fumbled the kickoff at the 2-yard line and Bradford scored on the next play.

Rowe raced 47 yards for a touchdown and extended the Vikings’ lead to 54-14.

J.C. Evans ran 54 yards for the final East touchdown with 3:17 to play.

The Vikings (7-0, 2-0) will host Oak Hill next Friday in a showdown for first place in the SOC. The game will be a “Touchdown for Breast Cancer” in an effort to raise money and awareness for the disease.
