County finally in stronger financial spot

Taxpayers can say that they do not like what the Lawrence County Commissioners have done in recent years, but they can’t complain that they haven’t done anything all.
This is the time of the year when, historically, county officeholders begin to talk about not having enough money to finish the year. It has become an almost annual dog-and-pony show.
Some of it was legitimate concern because the commission pushed tight budgets that weren’t fully funded due to budget shortfalls and some of the cause was a little bit of exaggeration.
Miraculously, every year the county always found the money that was needed.
This year that entire exercise won’t likely be necessary.
The county commissioners recently provided a glimpse of the current financial situation. It is much brighter than it has been in recent years and the commissioners deserve credit for what they have done.
But no one should mistake that praise for the perception that everything is rosy and perfect.
It took selling some key assets for the county to dig itself out of a deep hole and, arguably, not enough has been done to prepare for any potential challenges that could come from potential reduction of state funding — one of the key factors that partly created the financial strains to start with.
Citizens have every right way to say they disagree with what the commission has done and to suggest that other courses of action should have been taken.
However, no one can criticize this group for sitting by and doing nothing which has been the case at times with past leadership.
