COAL GROVE — The Coal Grove Hornets’ first team took half the day off.

The Hornets’ first unit did all their work in the first half and the reserves finished up in a 52-6 rout of the River Valley Raiders Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

Coal Grove (7-1, 3-0) racked up 347 total yards with 244 coming on the ground and quarterback Alex Bare completing 5 of 7 passes for 103 yards and a touchdown.

Boo Woods took advantage of his limited workday to carry nine times for 79 yards and three touchdowns. He also caught two passes for 56 yards including an 8-yard pass for a score to give him four TDs on the night.

Bubba Wood had just four carries for 17 yards but score two touchdowns. Greg Bender added 37 yards on only five carries. Backup Mike Nance ran four times for 99 yards and a touchdown.

Wood ran 6 yards for a touchdown and kicked the point after as Coal Grove took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.

The Hornets erupted for 37 points in the second quarter to build a 44-0 halftime cushion.

Woods scored three straight touchdowns on runs of 1 and 5 yards and then caught his scoring pass.

Wood had a 5-yard touchdown run and then Woods capped the first half scoring with a 40-yard gallop.

Nance bolted 86 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to complete the Hornets’ scoring.

The Raiders (1-7, 0-3) avoided the shutout on a 25-yard scoring run by Billy Brewer.

Coal Grove now plays two straight conference road games against the top two contenders. The Hornets visit Fairland on Friday and visit Chesapeake next week.
