Phil Davis knows what Doug Shilot is going through.
Last season, the Chesapeake Panthers had a young and inexperienced offensive and defensive lines. Now a year older, the maturity has paid off for the Panthers (3-5, 3-0) who are in a battle for an Ohio Valley Conference title.
Conversely, South Point has a young line on both sides of the ball as well as freshmen and sophomores at some of the skilled positions.
However, seniors Tevin Mitchell and Kyle Dickess provide speed and big-play capabilities for the Pointers (1-7, 0-3) who have been able to score but have struggled on defense.
Rock Hill at River Valley
The Rock Hill Redmen are beginning to make this season an instant replay of last year.
Now that the Redmen are getting healthy, they are playing well down the stretch much like last season when they won their final three games.
After starting the season 0-5 the Redmen lost 28-27 to Chesapeake in the sixth week and fell to powerhouse Coal Grove the following week in a game they were plagued by missed opportunities.
But the Redmen bounced back last week to beat South Point 35-28 and look to pick up their second straight win against River Valley (1-7, 0-3), a team that has struggled all season.
Symmes Valley at Portsmouth Notre Dame
The consolation prize is at stake.
Symmes Valley’s hopes of a Southern Ohio Conference championship are probably gone, but the Vikings (7-1) will battle the Notre Dame Titans (4-4) for second place on Saturday night at Spartan Stadium.
The Vikings are 2-1 and can clinch second place with a win. The Titans are 1-1.
Symmes Valley must stop the Titans’ big plays and running back Ryan Bradford. In last week’s 23-7 win over Green, Bradford ran 20 times for 190 yards including a 53-yard scoring run.
Sciotoville East at Green
It’s one team healing from its injuries versus a team licking its wounds.
The East Tartans have struggled through an injury-plagued season. Green is finally healthy and the Bobcats (3-5, 0-2) are looking to double their win total from last season and stay out of the SOC cellar.
Quarterback Steven Blanton — who missed several games with an injury — threw a 7-yard scoring pass last week to T.J. McCloud for the Bobcats only score.
The injuries have taken their toll on East’s defense. The Tartans (3-5, 0-2) have allowed 225 points or an average of more than 28 points per game.
