Panthers upset Hornets for OVC title

Chesapeake 25, Coal Grove 22

CHESAPEAKE — The Chesapeake Panthers scored with 45 seconds left as they rallied to upset the Coal Grove Hornets 25-22 Friday and win the Ohio Valley Conference championship.

Quarterback Austin McMaster ran 5 yards on a keeper for the go-ahead score and then the Panthers intercepted a pass with 28 seconds left to secure the win.

Nate Jones ran for 134 yards and scored twice. Trey West added 50 yards and a score while McMaster was 4 of 8 passing for 41 yards.

Boo Woods ran for 66 yards while fullback Bubba Wood had two 1-yard runs for touchdowns. The Hornets’ powerful running game had just 100 yards but quarterback Alex Bare was 7 of 15 for 124 yards.

After starting the season 0-5, the Panthers finished 5-5 on the season and 5-0 in the OVC. Coal Grove fell to 8-2 and 4-1 and must now await their playoff fate when pairings are announced Sunday. The Hornets lost a chance to host a home game and tumbled to eighth place and will probably play at Oak Hill next Saturday in a rematch of last year’s first round playoff game.

Ironton 45, Portsmouth 25

PORTSMOUTH — The Ironton Fighting Tigers had little trouble moving the ball on Portsmouth as Tyler Hager ran for 125 yards and scored five touchdowns in a 45-25 win over the Trojans.

Ironton (8-2) clinched first place in the Region 15 Division IV playoffs and will probably host Albany Alexander at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the first round of the playoffs.

Ironton lead 16-12 at the end of the first quarter but opened up a 38-18 halftime cushion as Warner scored four times and fullback Brian Warner added a 7-yard TD run.

The Fighting Tigers ran for 332 yards with Tres Wilks getting 79 yards on 12 carried and Warner had 63 on 10 tries.

South Point 57, River Valley 36

BIDWELL — South Point rushed for 472 yards and the Pointers built a 26-0 halftime lead en route to a 58-36 win over the River Valley Raiders Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

Tevin Mitchell ran 11 times for 165 yards and Curtis Jackson had 99 yards on nine carries to lead the Pointers’ ground game. Mitchell was 3 of 5 passing for 61 yards as South Point (2-8, 1-4) racked up 533 total yards..

Trey Campbell had 72 yards rushing, scored four touchdowns and intercepted three passes — one he returned 83 yards for the Pointers’ final score. Kyle Dickess added 75 yards on five carries.

Jacob Hefner was 9 of 24 passing for 168 yards and two TDs. Patrick Williams returned a kickoff 90 yard for a score as River Valley finished 1-9, 0-5.
