Herd routs Glenville State; Oakland FTs beat Ohio

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — Johnny Thomas scored 16 points off the bench to lead six players in double figures for Marshall in a 93-48 rout of Glenville State on Monday night.

Thomas was 8 of 10 from the field, DeAndre Kane 7 of 11 and Tirrell Baines 5 of 6 for the hot-shooting Thundering Herd (2-0). Marshall shot 69 percent from the field (40 of 58), including 72 percent in the second half (18 of 25).

Marshall scored 60 points in the paint and 27 off 23 Pioneers’ turnovers. It was the lowest score by an opponent since Marshall’s 66-47 win over Rice on Jan. 9, 2008.

Kane finished with 14 points, Baines 13, Shaquille Johnson 11 and Johnny Higgins and Dago Pena added 10 each for the Thundering Herd.

Marshall led 23-13 and scored 14 straight over the next 4:43 to lead by 24 on Baines’ jumper with 5:49 left until halftime.

Nick Dent paced the Pioneers (0-2) with 15 points.

Oakland (Mich.) 78, Ohio 66

ATHENS, Ohio (AP) — Ledrick Eackles scored 18 points and Oakland (Mich.) dominated from the free-throw line to defeat Ohio 78-66 on Monday night.

The Golden Grizzlies (1-1) hit 27 of 35 foul shots, 19 of 26 in the second half, and made 23 of 50 field goals (46 percent).

Oakland used a 16-0 run to lead 22-6 with 7:48 left in the first half, but the Bobcats (1-1) scored six unanswered points in the last 51 seconds before halftime to trail 35-24.

Ohio cut the gap to seven twice in the second half, the second time with 16:07 to go, but could get no closer.

The Bobcats shot 33.8 percent (23 of 68) from the field and 45.5 percent (10 of 22) from the free throw line.

Larry Wright added 15 points and nine rebounds for the Golden Grizzlies and Reggie Hamilton had 14 points in the second game of a seven-game road trip.

Tommy Freeman led Ohio with 22 points and D.J. Cooper had 18.
