Election official: It stays the same

There won’t be any recounts this year. The official count of the November general election won’t change the final results.

“Nothing has changed,” Eric Bradshaw, deputy director of the Lawrence County Board of Elections, said.

A year ago, automatic recounts were triggered in races for Rome Township Trustees, Hamilton Township Trustees, South Point Board of Education, Upper Township Trustees and Ironton City Council

In two of those contests it took a flip of a coin to determine the outcomes. Michael McDaniels beat out veteran officeholder Don Klaiber for Upper Township Trustee. Larry Fraley won over Forest Kerns for Hamilton Township Trustee.

Monday morning’s tally added up the provisionals as well as the absentee ballots that came in after election day and ballots cast by the military.

Provisionals occur when voters come to polls without an proper form of identification or have moved to another precinct without changing their registration. Voters can vote on election day, but have 10 days to present proper ID to the board of elections.

“There wasn’t enough of anything to change an outcome of a race,” Bradshaw said.

This November 38 and a half percent of the 47,438 registered voters in the county showed up to vote either at the polls, by absentee or through a military ballot.
