True positive impact starts with actions

Our society today is fraught with “armchair quarterbacks” or “sideline experts” that have all the answers to every situation — but of course offered up from the safe vantage point of not involved or with the clarity of hindsight.
Far too many people want to talk about what is wrong with the world today, but all the while, do nothing to make a difference in it or make it a better place to live.
Thankfully, Franklin Furnace resident Vicki Nickell and South Point resident Brenda Horan aren’t among that group.
These two women didn’t even know each other until recently but have become linked by a common desire to make a difference and do something — anything — to help those in need.
Nickell is a beautician at Fiesta Salon in South Point. While cutting Horan’s hair, she learned a little about Horan’s heart-warming story.
The woman quit her job a few years ago, taking a leap of faith, in order to try to do something positive and in memory of her son who was killed in a car accident.
Horan started Michael’s Grace Place, a food pantry and clothing closet in South Point. The grassroots volunteer organization now helps more than 200 families each month.
Inspired by this story, Nickell contacted the Fiesta corporate office and got the OK to offer discounted haircuts during the week of Dec. 5 through Dec. 11. Haircuts will be just $6 for men, women and children with a donation of four nonperishable food items.
The efforts of both women should be applauded and supported. For that, they are recognized as this week’s “Good News, Good Neighbors” feature.
This is proof that everyone can make a difference. All it takes is commitment and action.
