PEDRO — Rock Hill coach Bob Wilds didn’t give any rousing halftime speech. He just found a hammer and took the lid off the basket.
The Rock Hill Redmen were a meager 3 of 16 from the field in the first half and just 4 of 14 from the foul line. The result was a 25-12 halftime deficit.
But the Redmen used a strong third quarter to tie the game and came back to beat the Gallipolis Blue Devils 60-57 in overtime Saturday night in the season opener for both teams.
“It was two totally different halves. We couldn’t buy a field goal in the first half,” said Rock Hill coach Bob Wilds. “But we turned it around the second half.”
After the dismal first half, the Redmen were 14of 24 from the field in the second half.
Will McCollister and Andy Knipp scored eight points each in the third quarter as Rock Hill stormed back to tie the game at 35.
Each team scored 17 points in the fourth quarter to force the overtime.
Gallipolis scored first in the overtime only to have Rock Hill tie the score and take the lead for good as Mitchell Patterson scored three points.
“We fought back. I was real proud that we were down at the half and kept fighting and turned things around the third quarter,” said coach Wilds.
“We did okay defensively. We just need to keep improving.”
McCollister led the Redmen with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Knipp had 10 points and six rebounds while Devin Darby scored 15 points and Shane Russell 12. Trey Wilds had six assists.
Gallipolis was led by Ethan Moore with 15 points and Nick Saunders scored 13.
