Marshall lands 8 on All-Conference USA

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall University had eight players recognized on the 2010 All-Conference USA Football Teams, including two first-team selections in senior linebacker Mario Harvey and junior defensive end Vinny Curry, C-USA announced Tuesday.

Harvey, a senior linebacker from Forsyth, Ga., was one of only 15 Butkus Award Semi-Finalists and the only one from a non-BCS AQ conference. He ranks 4th in the nation and 2nd in C-USA in tackles per game with 11.9 and has 143 total tackles (65 solo), 17.5 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery this season. His 8.5 sacks and 17.5 tackles for loss rank third in C-USA. He ended his brilliant career with 420 total tackles, tying Donahue Stephenson (1990-93) for fifth all-time at Marshall.

Curry, a junior defensive end from Neptune, N.J., leads Conference USA and ranks third in the nation in sacks with 12 and has 94 total tackles (7.83 per game), 18 tackles for loss (ranks second in Conference USA), two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery this season. His 94 total tackles are the most by a defensive lineman in the nation this season.

Marshall tight end Lee Smith and center Chad Schofield both earned Second-Team All-Conference USA honors. Smith, a senior tight end from Powell, Tenn., recorded 38 catches for 358 yards and three touchdowns this season, while Schofield, a senior from Strongsville, Ohio, was a vital cog at center for Marshall that completed his collegiate career having started in 30 games.

Thundering Herd sophomore wide receiver Aaron Dobson from South Charleston, W.Va., junior free safety Omar Brown from Moncks Corner, S.C., and sophomore strong safety Donald Brown all earned honorable mention All-C-USA status. Dobson led Marshall with 44 catches for 689 yards and five touchdowns this season, while Omar Brown tallied 88 tackles with three interceptions, and Donald Brown added 75 total tackles with three interceptions.

Marshall defensive end Marques Aiken was the Herd’s lone representative on the All-Conference USA All-Freshman team. The redshirt-freshman from Lauderhill, Fla., saw considerable action this season and made three starts. He was credited with 15 tackles, a half sack, a pass breakup and a fumble recovery in his first year of action.
