LIBRARY NEWS – 12/12/10

Children of all ages are invited to Briggs Lawrence County Public Library’s annual children’s Christmas programs which include stories, music, crafts and treats. Parents are reminded to bring their cameras because they won’t want to miss their children’s visits with special guests from the North Pole. This week, Santa and Mrs. Claus will visit the South Point library at 6 p.m. Monday, the Chesapeake library at 6 p.m. Tuesday, the Ironton library at 6 p.m. Wednesday and the Proctorville library at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Teens in grades 6 through 12 are invited to join the library’s teen advisory board (TAB). There will be a TAB meeting at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the South Point library. TAB members help the library’s young adult librarian select materials, write the teen newsletter and plan programs.

Everyone’s invited to get into the holiday spirit as the sounds of the season peal through the stacks of the Main Library in Ironton this week. The Ironton High School Choir will serenade you at 6 p.m. Monday, the Ohio University Southern Band will perform at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and the Ironton Middle School Jazz Combo will play at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Everyone interested in learning to crochet as well as those already experienced at the craft is invited to the Crochet Club that meets at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Southern Branch Library in South Point. Beginners should bring a “G” or “H” crochet hook and yarn.

Everyone’s invited to participate in a Briggs Library book discussion group. Five groups meet this week. The South Point library group will talk about “The Perfect Christmas” by Debbie Macomber at 2 p.m. Tuesday. On Wednesday, the Chesapeake group will talk about “The Christmas Sweater” by Glenn Beck at 2 p.m. and the Ironton afternoon group will discuss “Family Blessings” by Fern Michaels at 2:30 p.m. On Thursday, the Sybene Senior Center group will discuss “Redbird Christmas” by Fannie Flagg at 12:45 p.m. and the Proctorville library group will talk about “Cedar Cove Christmas” by Debbie Macomber at 2 p.m.

Bring a snack and a friend for a free showing of the perennial Christmas favorite, “Babes in Toyland” at the Main Library in Ironton at 2 p.m. Thursday. Victor Herbert’s sparkling music and Disney’s dazzling sets combine in this classic fantasy adventure when Mary Quite Contrary (Annette Funicello) and Tom the Piper’s Son (Tommy Sands) travel to a magical world filled with song, dance, and laughter.
