Short-term note to help start new EMS

A revenue anticipation note will be issued to help get the new Lawrence County Emergency Medical Services up and running.
Lawrence County Commissioners approved at their regularly scheduled Thursday meeting to issue the note not to exceed $600,000. The funds will be used to cover any costs before the EMS can begin billing itself. That will happen after it receives its Medicare and Medicaid insurance billing numbers.
Commissioners also approved design work by E.L. Robinson for new runway lights at the Lawrence County Airpark and a pre-application to secure FAA funding for construction. FAA funds will cover 95 percent of both the design and construction costs.
Total design costs will be $25,000 with the county responsible for $1,250. Construction will cost $250,000 with the county’s part to be $12,500.
The project will replace runway lights with up-to-date equipment that is compliant with current standards.
In other action, the commissioners:
• Received a prosecutor’s opinion that gave the go-ahead for a temporary billing agreement between the Lawrence County EMS and Huntington, W.Va.-based Medical Claims Assistance.
• Approved a resolution of support for the City of Ironton’s seeking Clean Ohio Revitalization Funds for its riverfront project.
• Received a study from Wayne Cannon, rural development supervisor on possible new rates for the Union Rome Sewer District.
• Received the weekly dog warden report where 35 dogs were destroyed, four were sold and one was redeemed.
• Hired four additional part-time employees for the Lawrence County EMS at rates from $10.20 to $9 an hour.
The commissioners will meet on Tuesday for their regular meeting because of the upcoming Christmas holiday.
