Coal Grove man gets six years for drug charges

A Coal Grove man will serve six years in prison for drug charges.

James W. Fleming, 40, of 108 North St., Coal Grove, was sentenced for three counts of aggravated trafficking in drugs and one count of complicity to aggravated trafficking in drugs in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court Wednesday. Fleming, who is also known as “Bill Bill,” had previously pleaded guilty Nov. 17. Judge Scott Bowling had continued his sentencing pending a presentencing investigation.

“I’d like to apologize to the court and to my family and the community,” Fleming said.

Fleming will be given credit for time served and be fined $5,000.

Also in court Wednesday, James R. Basenback, 21, 226 McCalum St., Westwood, Ky., pleaded guilty to not complying with an order or signal of a police officer. Judge Charles Cooper sentenced Basenback to three years in prison.

In other cases:

William K. Estep, 21, of 102 N. Jones St. Proctorville, pleaded not guilty to felonious assault, endangering children and tampering with evidence. Estep’s alleged victim is a 2-year-old boy. The child is in the hospital with head trauma after having been severely injured, Assistant Prosecutor Brigham Anderson said. Anderson declined to comment on the specific details of the case, saying only that it was alleged child abuse.

Dennis A. Clark, of 90 Pine St., Ironton, 38, waived his right to a speedy trial. Clark is charged with first-degree involuntary manslaughter in the death of Eddie Thibodaux.

Brian Webb, 31, of 95 Private Drive 1005, Township Drive 1005, Willow Wood, pleaded not guilty to two counts of assault on a police officer. Bowling set bond at $20,000 on his own recognizance with GPS monitoring.

Michelle Calver, 52, of 117 Boven Blvd. Apartment D, Wheelersburg, admitted violating the terms of her community-controlled sanctions by failing to pay restitution. Calver’s community-controlled sanctions were extended one year. Bowling stipulated that if Calver paid the restitution before the year is over, she would be taken off of CCS.

Bret Dement, 21, of 262 Township Road 1234, Proctorville, pleaded not guilty to four counts of breaking and entering, a fifth degree felony, and one count of obstructing official business, a misdemeanor. Bowling set bond at $20,000 OR plus $20,000 cash or surety.

Shannon Putnam, 29, of 207 Township Road 1302, Chesapeake, pleaded guilty to grand theft, a fourth-degree felony. Bowling sentenced Putnam to four years of community-controlled sanctions and ordered him to successfully complete the STAR community justice program. Putnam was also ordered to pay court costs and $5,000 in restitution.

Terry Unrue, 33, of 3028 S. Fourth St., Ironton, pleaded guilty to breaking and entering and two counts of endangering children. Bowling sentenced Unrue to a total of nine months in prison.
