James Leland Carney, 74, of Ironton, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010, at the Huntington Health and Rehab Center in Huntington, W. Va.
The Charleston, W.Va., native was born Aug. 11, 1934, the son of the late Marvin Oakle and Lessie Parsons Carney.
Mr. Carney was a graduate of Elkview Schools in West Virginia and a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was a former conductor for the CSX Railroad, retiring in 1992 after 37 years of service. He was a member of the Moose Lodge #701 in Ironton, Eagles, and the American Legion Post #43 in Raceland, Kentucky. He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Irene Arbaugh.
He is survived by two sons, James “Jay” William Carney of Barboursville, W.Va., and Gregory Allen Carney of Ashland, Ky. and a brother, William Franklin Carney of Gaithersburg, Md.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Hayes-Phillips Funeral Home with Pastor Greg Tomlinson officiating. Burial will follow in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens with military graveside rites by the VFW Post 8850. Friends may call Monday from 11:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
