CHESAPEAKE — Tim Farren is a well-known face around the Chesapeake Community Center. For almost a decade he has taught martial arts at the center to youth and adults alike.
Now he is introducing a new kind of exercise workout that is gaining popularity across the country based on a championship mixed martial arts bout.
Cage Fitness is a cardio and strength training exercise that Farren says can be used by teens and adults, men and women.
“It is basically designed for any body, at any fitness level,” he said. “You go at your own pace. It is kind of like Tae Bo.”
The regimen is made up of five five-minute exercises for a total 30 minute-workout.
“You have seven exercises in each round,” Farren said. “You are switching every 30 to 45 seconds to a different exercise. It is kind of fast-paced. This program is developed pretty much as a total body workout. It is geared mainly for teenagers and adults.”
Right now Farren is offering those interested in exploring Cage Fitness a free trial class at 7 p.m. Mondays or Tuesdays at the center. The classes officially start the first week in February with classes at 8 a.m., 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. Mondays; 7 p.m. Tuesdays; 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. Wednesdays; and 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. Fridays. There is a monthly fee for the classes.
So far Farren says he is getting positive feedback from students trying out the program.
“Adults seem to love it,” he said. “I am getting a lot of ‘I was sore the next day, but it is a great workout.’ I think it will be the next big workout.”
