Financial aid assistance can pave way

It is never too soon for this year’s high school seniors and their parents to start thinking about college — or how to pay for it.

Just making the transition can be difficult for the student but navigating the confusing world of financial aid can be overwhelming for their parents, especially those who have been out of school a longtime or never had the opportunity to attend college.

Getting financial assistance might be the most important part of the entire process. It can also be the most intimidating.

The key step is correctly filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, commonly called FAFSA for short.

Don’t worry, parents. Help is out there and it is far closer than you might think.

Ohio University Southern has again been chosen as a host site for the statewide College Goal Sunday again this year at 2 p.m. Feb. 13.

The free, one-day event is held on campuses throughout Ohio to eliminate this obstacle to higher education.

Parents or students can register to attend the event by calling OUS, visiting www.ohiocollegegoalsunday.org or by calling 1-888-833-1133.

Families attending the event will need to bring their 1040 tax returns and W-2 forms as well as their child’s tax returns and W-2’s. They should also bring Social Security cards and driver’s licenses and all other benefit and income information.

We applaud the state and OUS for pushing hard to address this need. It is never too early to start.
