OHV riders face new trail regs

There are some new rules out for riders of off-highway vehicles when they come to the Wayne National Forest.
A forest order was declared Thursday that riders must wear a helmet and eye protection at all times while on the OHVs on the WNF trails.
Also alcohol consumption by riders is forbidden while on Wayne National trails.
“We would like to reduce the numbers and severity of OHV accidents,” Tim Slone, WNF Ironton district ranger, told Lawrence County Commissioners. “We do want to promote family events and safety is important for families.”
Slone unveiled the new regulations during the commissioners’ Thursday meeting.
Over the past five years there were at least 95 OHV accidents in the Athens District’s trail. Officials say at least one-third of those accidents were either alcohol-related or occurred from not wearing a helmet.
The order covers the Monday Creek OHV Trail System in the Athens District and the Hanging Rock, Pine Creek and Superior OHV Trail System in the Ironton District.
“Might I make a request,” Commission President Les Boggs asked. “You give a few warnings before you write big citations.”
Boggs was told there will be a six-month grace period starting Thursday on the order. That means violators will generally receive a verbal or written warning during this period. The OHV season begins in April.
