PORTSMOUTH — Patience is a virtue. It’s also a good way to beat an opponent.
Showing excellent patience on offense, the Symmes Valley Vikings beat the Portsmouth Notre Dame Titans 58-40 Friday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.
The Vikings took only 38 shots but hit 21 for 55 percent.
“We had long possessions. We were patient and we forced them to pass a lot with our defense. We really put the defense on them,” said Fuller.
D.J. Miller led the Vikings with 18 points as he made 7 of 8 from the field.
“That was his best offensive game,” said Fuller. “We needed someone else to score. Luke (Taylor) was in foul trouble and sat out a lot of the first half.”
Ryan Stanley had 11 points and seven blocked shots while Tyler Wilson also scored 11 and had four steals for the Vikings (8-3, 4-2). Taylor had eight rebounds and five assists.
Kevin Lewis scored nine and J.P. Kayser eight to pace the Titans (5-5, 2-4).
Symmes Valley held the Titans to just seven points in the first half in building a 25-7 lead at the break.
Lewis and Kayser each made a pair of 3-pointers in the third quarter as the Titans outscored the Vikings 18-15 to trail 40-25.
“They got real loose and hit four 3’s in the third quarter. You expect them to come out with something, but we weathered that and played them even the second half,” said Fuller.
Miller scored nine in the fourth quarter including a 3-pointer as the Vikings opened the lead back to 18.
