Gus Macker still up in the air

The Friends of Ironton say they still don’t have all the details together to confirm dates for this year’s Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament.

Friends’ president Rick Jansen said on Monday, “Within 30 days, we’ll be certain.”

Friends of Ironton began hosting the early summertime tournaments seven years ago when the civic group was formed.

The tournaments bring hundreds of players of all ages together for one of Ironton’s biggest community weekends.

Founder of Gus Maker, Scott McNeal said it is not unusual to have late entries to the nationwide schedule.

“We go to press online Jan. 1 with our official schedule,” McNeal said. “And it’s just a deposit they give to us that’s already agreed upon that they’re going to do their tournament. Out of 40 to 50 tournaments, I only had maybe 17 to 20 that I had in by that time. So that’s why you see my schedule changing week to week. It keeps getting updated. It isn’t that unusual this year that they’re a little late.”

Last November, the Friends announced that they were seeking a new chairperson for Gus Macker, a position formerly held by Joyce Lynd.
