UAB rallies by Herd; Ohio downs EMU

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Aaron Johnson scored 19 points and Alabama-Birmingham overcame a 10-point deficit late in the second half to defeat Marshall 60-56 on Wednesday night.
After the Blazers (14-5, 4-2 Conference USA) rallied from nine points down in the first half to tie it at 21, Marshall went on a 9-4 run for a 30-26 halftime lead.
Marshall (13-7, 1-4) built a 48-38 lead with 7:14 to go, then UAB used a 16-1 spurt to pull ahead 54-49 with 58 seconds left.
Leading 56-53 with 15 seconds on the clock, Johnson and Quincy Taylor each sank a pair of free throws for a seven-point advantage. Marshall’s DeAndre Kane hit his only 3-pointer of the game for the final margin.
Jamarr Sanders scored 15 points, Cameron Moore had nine points and 12 rebounds and Ovie Soko 10 boards for UAB.
Dago Pena had 14 points and Kane chipped in 13 to pace the Thundering Herd.
Ohio 79, Eastern Michigan 65
ATHENS (AP) — DeVaughn Washington tied his season high with 20 points as Ohio cruised to a 79-65 win over Eastern Michigan on Wednesday night, ending a three-game skid.
The Bobcats (9-11, 2-4 Mid-American Conference) also snapped a four-game home losing streak while shooting a season-high 54 percent from the field (27 of 50). Ohio also allowed a season-low 23 rebounds while grabbing 36 boards.
The Bobcats shot 52.2 percent in the first half (12 of 23), making 7 of 10 3-pointers, and hit 14 of 18 free throws en route to a 45-29 halftime lead.
Ohio, which led by as many as 28 points in the second half, was outscored 14-2 in the last 3:54 for the final margin.
Nick Kellogg added 15 points for the Bobcats and D.J. Cooper had 12.
Derek Thompson, who scored 13 points, was the lone player in double figures for Eastern Michigan (5-14, 2-4), which shot 44.9 percent (22 of 49).
