SOUTH POINT — The South Point Lady Pointers aren’t there yet, but they’re creeping a lot closer.
The Lady Pointers beat the Chesapeake Lady Panthers 66-43 Saturday to remain unbeaten in the Ohio Valley Conference at 7-0.
South Point (13-3) needs a win at home Monday against Fairland to clinch their seventh league title in eight years.
After pulling away late to beat Chesapeake in the first meeting, the Lady Pointers wasted little time establishing themselves this time.
“The first time we started slow and they kept the pace slow,” said South Point coach Dave Adams. “This time we jumped out early and got the pace we wanted.”
Allison Mitchell scored six points in the first quarter as South Point jumped in front 16-5.
Jalynn Bradburn had seven points for the Lady Pointers in the second quarter and Sarah Mayo got six for Chesapeake as each team scored 17 points and it was 33-22 at the half.
Kayla Fletcher scored eight points while Bradburn and Mitchell had seven points each in the third quarter as South Point racked up 22 points and built a comfortable 55-32 cushion.
“Kayla got a lot of steals in the third quarter and got us going and we were able to get the pace really going in our favor,” said Adams.
Bradburn led all scorers with 24 points. Mitchell had 17 points and Fletcher scored 15.
Mayo led Chesapeake with 19 points — seven in the fourth quarter — while Amanda Ruffner scored 12.
The Lady Panthers fell to 12-5 and 6-3 in the OVC.
